It would be right to say that the theory of evolution made known to us by the creator of the universe (the Almighty God) was and, today, is settled in a capital word called “truth”. Why on earth should man deviate from it? Or, does it mean that man- in his blur; perhaps, retrogressive mental “faculty”- has forgotten the theory so quickly. Well, here is a quick reminder: God neither sleeps nor goes on holidays- he watches all situations.
Here is the big case: there were many flaws in the CEO’s interview with Dayo Oketola. Most of these flaws could be revoked in the following ways:
The officials of the Nigeria Labour Congress were invited by the MTN Call Centre agents themselves to look into their conditions of service as well as the Management refusal to unionisation of workers- not the other way round as claimed by the CEO.
The CEO said, “Such incidents not only undermine our ability to fulfill our contractual obligations to MTN…” What arrant nonsense! You would like to fulfill contractual obligations at the expense of employees’ good conditions of service and utter freedom of association? This is ludicrous!
If I may ask now: what are the CEO’s terms that far exceeded the national minimum wage requirements and comparable with prevailing conditions for graduate employees in many areas of the private sector? Is it the #35,000 or #37,000 for a Customer Care Representative, who engages and endangers his five human senses in the job that yields millions of naira per hour , that is above minimum wage? Or, should we discuss other extreme poor conditions of service? I think the CEO should fear God- at least in this situation.
At least 99.9999%,if not 100%, of the CNSSL employees at present had several issues with their conditions of service right from the beginning but could not do anything about the conditions. Those who tried to voice out were shown the way out.
The NLC did not force anyone to form a union. Rather, it was the decision of the workers themselves.
The CEO, in his statement, failed to realise that what is obtainable in CNSSL may not be the same with other operators in the industry. Hence, should not try to convince other operators to join him in crimes against humanity.
Finally, It would be right for the Federal Government- particularly the National Assembly- to look into the affairs of these cruel telecoms operators( most especially CNSSL). Nonetheless, the fight remains ours- let us take it to them.A Rattle Snake Affair
